TFN Endorses in School Board Election That Has Become a Referendum on Equality

The Texas Freedom Network has long insisted that educators should play an important role in making decisions concerning public schools. So it should be no surprise that today TFN is endorsing two candidates for the Pflugerville Independent School District Board of Trustees — Carol Fletcher and Mario Acosta — who together have 60 years of experience in education.

But we are also supporting Carol and Mario because they have taken a stand for equality and against the voices of division and hate. As incumbent board members, they voted for a policy offering access to health insurance benefits for the domestic partners of district employees. Religious-right activists have attacked them because of their courageous stand for treating all district employees with equality and dignity. One local minister has even declared that God commands his congregation to vote against candidates who support domestic partner benefits.

We refuse to stand by silently while the religious right uses faith as a political weapon to divide our communities. And this election is important not just for Pflugerville ISD. What happens in this election could influence what other school districts and local governments do on the issue of benefits for the domestic partners of employees.

In short, the Pflugerville ISD school board elections this year have become a referendum on equality.

If you live in Pflugerville ISD, we encourage you to vote for Carol Fletcher and Mario Acosta. Early voting runs from through Tuesday, May 7 (but not on Sunday, May 5). 1. “One local minister has even declared that God commands his congregation to vote against candidates who support domestic partner benefits.”

Did this message arrive by telephone, telegraph, or FEDEX?

    1. Is anyone investigating whether this pastor is violating the prohibition against politicking for tax-exempt organizations, like churches? His church should lose it’s tax-exempt status.
