AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Senate today advanced Texas Senate Bill 2, a school voucher bill. It will now go to the Texas House for consideration. The legislation seeks to create a voucher program that would divert taxpayer dollars from benefiting students at public schools and instead subsidize education at private and religious schools.

Vouchers are a key priority for Governor Greg Abbott during the 89th Legislative Session, but the legislation failed to pass during the 88th Regular Legislative Session.

Texas Freedom Network Political Director Rocío Fierro-Pérez (she/her/ella) issued the following response:

“Public dollars should stay with public schools that serve all children. At a time when public education is under attack in Texas and across our nation, our leaders should be focused on fully funding our public schools. Instead, they’re playing political games with our children’s education. Voucher schemes steal vital funds from kids in our neighborhood schools, all so megadonors and the politicians in their pockets can subsidize private and religious schools for the wealthy at our expense.

“All children should have the freedom to pursue their dreams through quality, fully-funded public education — no matter their skin color, how much money their parents make, if they or their family are LGBTQIA+ or their zip code. Our neighborhood public schools serve all children, while private and religious schools get to pick and choose who they accept, and they have no accountability to teach our kids the truth. Texans, don’t be duped. Contact your representatives today and tell them to focus on finally fully funding our public schools.”
