The firestorm over Texas State Board of Education member Cynthia Dunbar’s vicious Internet rant against President-elect Barack Obama is growing. Blogs ranging from Daily Kos to the Texas Observer and points in between are calling out Dunbar’s venomous charge (among others) that Obama is a traitor who “truly sympathizes” with enemies out to destroy America. Dunbar also questioned Obama’s American citizenship and his legal eligibility to serve as president, and she warned that he will try to grab more power by declaring martial law as president. The Austin American-Statesman this weekend published a scathing editorial calling Dunbar “a disgrace to public education and an embarrassment to Texas.”

It appears that the Christian Worldview Network Web site has now taken down Dunbar’s outrageous diatribe. But it’s still available at Just Orb, God bless ’em. (In an earlier essay on another Web site, Dunbar suggested that Obama is a Marxist.)… Read More

If anyone still doubts the extremism of the faction that controls the Texas State Board of Education, then read this from board member Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond. It’s one thing when the occasional fringe lunatic barfs up mindless smears and drivel. It’s quite another thing when a duly elected official of the State Board of Education accuses a major presidential candidate of being a traitor to his nation:

We have been clearly warned by his running mate, Joe Biden, that America will suffer some form of attack within the first 6 months of Obama’s administration.  However, unlike Joe, I do not believe this “attack” will be a test of Obama’s mettle.  Rather, I perceive it will be a planned effort by those with whom Obama truly sympathizes to take down the America that is threat to tyranny.  What nobody seems to be discussing is the fact that if such an attack takes place, what about Martial Law?  What happens to expand executive power when a state of civil disorder is declared?

You can read the rest for yourself, but Dunbar goes on to say that Obama, if elected, will impose martial law to expand his… Read More

TFN President Calls on State Ed Board Member to Retract Reprehensible Charge that the Democratic Presidential Nominee Is a Traitor

SBOE Extremist Cynthia Dunbar Claims Obama ‘Truly Sympathizes’ with Enemies Plotting to Destroy America

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

November 3, 2008 Texas State Board of Education member Cynthia Dunbar, R-Richmond, should retract her reckless and revolting suggestion that Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama is a traitor who “truly sympathizes” with enemies plotting to destroy America, the president of the Texas Freedom Network said today.

“No matter who you support for president, we should all be able to agree that Ms. Dunbar’s disgusting attack is a shocking example of the extremism that has infected the state board,” TFN President Kathy Miller said. “It’s stunning that a board member who helps decide what Texas children learn in their public schools would say something so disgusting and reprehensible. She should be taking refresher courses in civics and good citizenship, not deciding what Texas kids learn.”

In an opinion piece dated Nov. 2 for the Christian Worldview Network Web site, Dunbar accuses Sen. Obama of sympathizing with enemies who want to destroy America:… Read More

TFN Calls on Attorney General to Enforce Textbook Law

State Board of Education Does End Run Around Anti-Censorship Law, TFN President Says

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 16, 2007

The president of the Texas Freedom Network today called on the state attorney general to demand that the State Board of Education stop violating a law that prevents board members from censoring public school textbooks.

“The state board is clearly thumbing its nose at the law,” TFN President Kathy Miller said. “A united faction of its most radical members is attempting an end run around the Legislature’s clear intent to bar them from censoring textbooks. If they get away with it, then it’s open season again on textbooks that teach about evolution and other topics that a majority of board members may have personal and political objections to.”

Earlier today, the state board voted to reject a proposed mathematics textbook for third grade. Board members who voted to reject that textbook refused to give reasons for doing so. They claimed that the board is not required to say why it rejects any textbook. Yet under a law passed by the Legislature in 1995, Senate Bill 1, the state board… Read More

When Cynthia "Public Schools Are Tools of Perversion" Dunbar recruited Austin attorney Brian Russell to run for the seat she is vacating on the Texas State Board of Education, the obvious question was whether Russell shares her contempt for public education. We got a partial answer when it was revealed that Russell home-schools his kids. Then yesterday the Austin American-Statesman's Jason Embry reported Russell's favorable reaction to an anti-public schools screed posted to Facebook by an officer of the Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT).
