Today is Transgender Day of Visibility. This year, as we celebrate the lives of transgender people and the beauty and diversity transgender Texans bring to our state, the most recent attacks demand we take action. In February, Attorney General Paxton and Gov. Greg Abbott took aim at transgender kids and their loving families, directing Texas CPS to investigate gender-affirming care for minors as child abuse. At face value, Shouting Down Midnight was about Davis’ historic 2013 filibuster to prevent a vote on SB 5, which would’ve wiped out access to abortion for most Texans. Gov. Greg Abbott claims to be confused about why there is a teacher shortage in our public schools. We’re not sure why he has questions, though, considering so many of the present issues teachers point to stem from his constant dismissal and undermining of public education. Nevertheless, on March 7, Abbott asked the Texas Education Agency to create a task force to address ongoing teacher shortages in public schools.
