Restrictions Were Never About Protecting Women’s Health, TFN President Says

AUSTIN – A new study shows what happens when politicians refuse to trust women to make their own reproductive health care decisions, Texas Freedom Network President Kathy Miller said today.
“Politicians lied about protecting women’s health to try to justify passing unnecessary anti-abortion laws,” Miller said. “These laws were always about blocking access, delaying care and shaming women who sought it. This new research shows what happens when politicians refuse to trust women to make their own reproductive health care decisions and put obstacles in the way of getting the safe, legal medical care they seek.”
The Texas Policy Evaluation Project (TxPEP) study released on Tuesday showed that the number of second-trimester abortion in Texas increased by 13 percent in the year after the state Legislature passed medically unnecessary abortion restrictions in 2013. The total number of abortions in the state dropped by 18 percent.
