2015 in Quotes: The Right’s LGBT Obsession II

Demonizing and promoting discrimination against LGBT people is one of the overriding obsessions of the right in America today. That was even more true this year, when the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the Constitution protects the right of same-sex couples to marry and local and state governments debated whether to protect LGBT people from discrimination. This is Part II of the things we heard from the right about LGBT people this year. (Click here for previous posts on what we heard from the right in 2015.)

“If you’re going to attribute the flooding in Texas to some kind of supernatural cause, you can make a geographical connection between the flooding and the practice of the occult and witchcraft and the embrace of homosexuality. That’s where the disaster is being felt the worse.”

– Religious-right radio host Bryan Fischer, agreeing with a caller who blamed heavy spring flooding in Texas on the Lone Star State allowing “witchcraft and sodomy” to “run rampant.”

“Sex also means gender identification. Title IX, which is what all the colleges use for sports, it goes out the door as well. So all your locker rooms now become one locker room, you can’t distinguish between male and female.”

– David Barton in an interview with Glenn Beck, explaining his vision of the after-effects of the legalization of same-sex marriage. Beck agreed, saying, “This destroys all of society.”

“Watch what happens, love affairs between men and animals are going to be absolutely permitted. Polygamy, without question, is going to be permitted. And it will be called a right.”

– Pat Robertson on the 700 Club, sharing his non-legal interpretation of the Supreme Court’s decision in favor of the freedom to marry for same-sex couples.

” Remember: Homosexuals can’t reproduce. They have to recruit. … Drive [LGBT citizens] out of our city! I don’t want them in our city. Send them back to San Francisco.”

– Houston hate-monger nad prominent religious-right leader Steve Hotze, in a speech over the summer.

“[U]nder God’s authority.”

– Kentucky county clerk Kim Davis, declaring under what authority she would refuse to grant marriage licenses to same-sex couples despite losing multiple court appeals, including at the U.S. Supreme Court.

“If the righteous are not running for office, if the righteous are not even voting, what is left? The wicked electing the wicked. And we get what we deserve. I’ll tell you what. It is appalling that in a city like Houston, right in the middle of the Bible Belt, we had a homosexual mayor. Why? Because too many people have been sitting in their pews or sitting at home with this business about ‘separation of church and state.’ Did you know separation of church and state is not in the Constitution or in the Declaration [of Independence]? It’s a lie.”

“Bathroom ordinance.”

The way opponents of the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance mischaracterized the measure, which would have barred discrimination based on 15 characteristics, including sexual orientation and gender identity. Opponents deceitfully argued that the ordinance would allow sexual predators into women’s restrooms. Houstonians voted down HERO in November.

“I think that’s the next thing that they’re going to push, to try to legalize pedophiles. Pedophilia, you have all these laws to forget about — we have laws on the books about statutory rape. You have to basically throw away the statutory rape laws to legalize pedophilia.”

– Rafael Cruz, father of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas, warning that LGBT activists want to legalize sex between adults and children.

“Here is what I would do: sackcloth and ashes at the entrance to the church and I’d sit in cow manure and I’d spread it all over my body. That’s what I would do, and I’m not kidding, I’m not laughing.”

– Colorado pastor Kevin Swanson, explaining what he would do if he found out one of his children were gay. Swanson was speaking at a political event that featured U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas and two other Republican presidential candidates. During his speech, Swanson pointed out that the Bible calls for gay people to be put to death. Cruz and his fellow GOP candidates refused to rebuke Swanson for his venomous rhetoric.

  1. When, I wonder, will the “righteous” start being righteous?
They show that they are anything but righteous by their hatred for anyone who isn’t one of them.
God does not hate, men do. They claim to be doing good while saying the most vile things about their fellow human beings.
They wallow in their ignorance while spreading their hatred.
Gay people do not “recruit.” They refuse to accept the science that states that sexuality, etc. are settled prior to birth. Too bad the god they worship laughs at them.

  2. Actually, the Psalmist says that God hates the workers of iniquity. Also throughout the Bible Old and New Testament anytime homosexuality is mentioned it is in an extremely negative light and was also a capital crime in Israel. It also guarantees that whoever practices is not only sinning but may also be the recipient of God’s judicial act whereby he turns a person over to that lifestyle of “degrading” passion. It is called strange flesh in Jude and 1st Timothy puts it in a condemning light.
A bible believing Christian can’t call it anything other than sin. Homosexuality is proof positive that man is in total rebellion against God and people who get angry over it prove that they are suffering from a possible delusion that God sends men when they refuse to acknowledge Him and his holiness.
It is very sad tome that people want to trivialize it when in fact it is going to have dire consequences spiritually, psychologically and physically.

But for the grace of God there go I so I am not going to stand in the place of God and be cruel or mistreat them but I am going to call sin sin and for that the messenger is not to be argued with only God can rightfully judge and administer justice.

    1. What are these “dire consequences” you are preaching to us about? Oh, I bet you are going to say HIV, STDs, sex addiction, etc. Heterosexuals participate in all that as well, so being straight is no guarantee. And what is this “God’s judicial act whereby he turns a person over to that lifestyle of “degrading” passion” you are talking about. God punishes some sinners by making them gay and even more sinful? Surely that’s not what you mean. What do you mean?
Anyone who claims to espouse “family values” (such as right-wing Republicans) should be outright ecstatic that same-sex marriage is now legal, giving full family rights to even MORE families now. Yes, these sinful gay people are often upright heads of household, doing splendid jobs of childrearing, etc.

  3. These people are not Christian, they are nothing more than extremists wanting to push their beliefs onto every other person in this Country, much like the Taliban.

  4. I think Gregg Abbott’s stance that he would authorize state funds to defend county clerks who refused to issue marriage license on the basis of their religious beliefs is noteworthy in 2015. And he threatened to sue the Supreme Court. He issued a memo to heads of all state agencies directing them to “preserve, protect, and defend the religious liberty of every Texan.” That order “applies to any agency decision,” including granting or denying benefits, managing state employees and making decisions on or enforcing contracts, licenses and permits, the memo says. Of course, that fell flat, but Gobner Gregg sure wanted to look like he was keeping his state free of happily married gay people to keep bitter “religious” folk happy.
