Statement: Texas Freedom Network Condemns Gun Violence And Calls For Government Leadership To Commit To Keeping Our Children Safe At School

AUSTIN, Texas – On Tuesday, May 24, 21 people– 19 children and two teachers, tragically lost their lives to gun violence when a shooting occurred at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, TX.

Texas Freedom Network President Val Benavidez issued the following response:

Children deserve to live in a world free from shootings and acts of violence in their schools, homes, and communities. But at this moment, we find ourselves grieving the loss of 19 children and two adults due to gun violence at a Texas elementary school. Our hearts go out to the entire Uvalde community as they navigate through Tuesday’s unspeakable tragedy.

While our communities work together to comfort families affected, we are left with no action from our government to actually save lives from gun violence. Instead, Governor Abbott tells us to pick up the pieces as he joins Senator Cruz at a National Rifle Association meeting just days after the deadliest elementary school shooting in Texas history. We know the worth of our lives, but in the seven years since taking office, Abbott has not taken action to end the loss of lives due to wrongful gun ownership. We need state leadership that will ensure we have laws in place to keep Texans safe from gun violence so we don’t have to worry about whether our children will come home safe from school.
