The Week in Quotes (Sept. 27 – Oct. 3)

Here are some of the week’s most notable quotes culled from news reports from across Texas, and beyond.

Retiring House Speaker John Boehner, lashing out at far-right politicians and activists, blaming them for political strategies that “never had a chance.”

The Bible says beware of false prophets. And there are people out there, you know, spreading noise about how much can get done. I mean this whole notion that we’re going to shut down the government to get rid of Obamacare in 2013 — this plan never had a chance.

Peter Montgomery of People for the American Way, writing in The Hill.

This most recent attack on Planned Parenthood is part of an ongoing campaign to make abortion illegal and inaccessible to American women. It is waged by ideologues for whom the end justifies dishonest means.

Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards, in testimony before the House Oversight Committee on Tuesday.

The outrageous accusations leveled against Planned Parenthood based on heavily doctored videos are offensive and categorically untrue. I realize, though, that the facts have never gotten in the way of these campaigns to block women from health care they need and deserve.

A court filing on behalf of Kentucky Gov. Steve Beshear, who is being sued by Rowan County Clerk Kim Davis.

Simply stated, Davis’ role is a legal one — not a moral or religious one.

The Rev. Federico Lombardi, the Vatican spokesman, on the pope’s meeting with Kim Davis.

The pope did not enter into the details of the situation of Mrs. Davis, and his meeting with her should not be considered a form of support of her position in all of its particular and complex aspects.

  1. You could have almost made a ‘quote cloud’ based on Pope Francis’ actions. I have to thank Mat Staver for his contributions — including his wife’s tweeted claims that ‘the Vatican probably received death threats from intolerant radicals.’ — that ‘forced’ (or gave Pope Francis the opportunity) the announcement that the Pope had only one meeting that day, with an ex-student of his ‘and his family.’ Francis had called the student himself and wanted the opportunity to ‘give him a hug’ while he was in Washington.

The student is gay, Pope Francis has ‘always known he was gay’ they have argued over SSM in public — a friendly argument — and the ‘family’ was his partner of 19 years — I haven’t found out if they are, in fact, married, but ‘family’ was the term the Vatican used.

There are very few people I’d less like to get into a fight with than someone who has the ‘heart of Assisi,’ the ‘brains of Xavier,’ and the toughness of the bar bouncer he once was.

  2. Davis has nothing on which to stand. Nowhere in the bible does it say that ONLY one man and one woman can marry. Look it up, go blind looking for it. It simply isn’t there.
SCOTUS did not write a new law. It simply corrected what the states were doing by not permitting same-sex marriage.
READ the 14th Amendment. It is called the “Equal Protection Under the Law.” Because states were prohibiting same-sex marriage for occurring, it was breaking the Constitution.
READ it, understand what it is saying and then STFU about it.
My question to those who oppose gay marriage is HOW DOES PERMITTING SAME-SEX MARRIAGE DIRECTLY AFFECT YOU?
It doesn’t. I’ve nothing but contempt for anyone who does not want equal protection under the law. You might as well be fascists as far as I’m concerned.
