The Week in Quotes (March 18 – 24)

Here are some of the week’s most notable quotes culled from news reports from across Texas, and beyond.

Marty Rowley, a Republican running for the Texas State Board of Education in District 15, discussing his support for abstinence-only sex education in public schools and falsely implying that sex ed is nothing more than passing out contraception.

I believe if we pass out condoms at schools we’re saying, ‘Yeah, we’re teaching you about abstinence, but we know you’re not going to pay attention to it, so here’s a condom to make sure that you don’t get pregnant.

Keri Adams, vice president of external affairs at Planned Parenthood of Middle and Eastern Tennessee, pointing out the inconsistency of state lawmakers who support teaching creationism in the classroom on the basis that they just want to provide students with information, but are opposed to teaching comprehensive sex education.

With the evolution debate in particular, it’s like, ‘Well, we think kids should be able to be curious and that they’re intelligent enough to sort through the information and decide for themselves’ with a little asterisk that says, ‘except for comprehensive sex ed.’

We cannot afford to lose the Medicaid funding for low-income women to have health care services. We can’t keep turning back federal funds that every state gets and then try to find money in our budget, which is already being cut in key areas like education.

  1. Grover Norquist is expressing with confidence that the fall 2012 election results will see a new Republican President, a Republican Senate, and a Republican House that will rule America for 60 straight years with no interruptions where Democrats are in charge of any one of those—with an all-conservative RWNJ Supreme Court as well. He forgot to say that.

I can tell you folks. With the Ryan budget proposal that came out the other day, if Norquist is right, all you old people and poor people out there can kiss Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid goodbye forever. You atheists and agnostics need to be figuring out which church you are planning to “pretend attend” to keep your families safe from the inquistion.

    Just sayin’…

Alternatively, we could all just go to the polls, kick their right wing butts, and ruin their dreams. I like that option.
