TFN Statement on Gov. Abbott’s Hypocritical ‘Parental Bill of Rights’

For Immediate Release
Feb. 9, 2022

BROWNSVILLE, Texas – Governor Greg Abbott is scheduled today to speak in the Rio Grande Valley about his proposed bill he titled “Parental Bill of Rights.”

Texas Freedom Network President Val Benavidez had the following response:

“Most of us believe that every child deserves an accurate, honest, and quality education no matter the color of their skin or where they call home. Unfortunately, what we’re seeing is politicians like Gov. Abbott trying to scare parents and turn them against schools and teachers to push forward their own political agenda. Abbott is not protecting students or increasing parents’ access to course curriculum. Abbott is still the same politician who opposed masks in schools and continues to put efforts into diverting funding from our local schools to predominantly white, suburban, upper-income private and religious schools. Parents and local members of the community do have the power to speak with teachers, voice opinions on the curriculum at the State Board of Education when TEKS are chosen, and have the power to vote for politicians who allow local communities to determine the education students receive. Abbott needs to stop overstepping and undermining the public education system.”
