AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Freedom Network sent a Public Information Act request to the Texas Education Agency late Monday, seeking the release of State Board of Education meeting documents on new school curriculum requirements.
It’s been seven weeks since the SBOE last met to make changes to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills in social studies, and yet the TEA has not shared any of the standards or amendments that were passed, or any of the proposed high school drafts for the upcoming September meeting.
Texas Freedom Network Deputy Director Carisa Lopez (she/her) issued the following statement:
“It’s outrageous that the political leadership at TEA is choosing to once again keep parents in the dark about the education of their own children. We’ve seen this song and dance before, where these same politicians are leaving the public with little time to read and understand what the SBOE will be deciding in September. After a chaotic flurry of amendments in June, the education commissioner is now playing political games to hide the mess they’ve created. Our families deserve to know the truth.”
The SBOE delayed changes to four high school social studies courses after a requirement about the American Revolution was accidentally eliminated during a late-night amendment session. This was corrected the next day, but Chairman Aaron Kinsey admitted the board made mistakes when they worked through late hours.
So far this year, the drafts of the TEKS have repeatedly been posted very close to SBOE meetings at which the board was planning to debate them, giving the public little time to analyze what was up for debate. The next SBOE meeting is set to begin on August 31, 2026.
