Texas state Sen. Dan Patrick, one of three Republicans trying to unseat David Dewhurst as lieutenant governor next year, thinks he knows what God wants people to hear. Lone Star Q reports that Patrick was a guest Thursday on The Chad Hasty Show, a radio program on KFYO in Lubbock. Patrick weighed in on recent controversial comments by Phil Robertson, star of the reality television show Duck Dynasty. Here’s some of what Patrick had to say:
“Think about this, Chad. God has used Phil, of all people, a ‘Duck Dynasty’ show, to say clearly what He is thinking. I don’t agree with the way Phil said some things in the article, maybe God would not have used those words, but when he’s talking about God, and he’s talking about the principles of the Bible, that’s powerful. Think about how God is speaking to his people at the Christmas season through Uncle Phil about this issue. I think that’s the story, and I think it’s powerful, and it excites me as a Christian.”
God is speaking through Robertson? So, Sen. Patrick, does God also want his people to know that African Americans during the pre-civil right era — “pre-entitlement, pre-welfare” — were just happy folks? Robertson said that.
Or maybe Patrick is just talking about Robertson’s anti-gay comments. Was God also talking to his people when Robertson had this to say about gay people in 2010, Sen. Patrick?
“They’re full of murder, envy, strife, hatred. They are insolent, arrogant God haters. They are heartless. They are faithless. They are senseless. They are ruthless. They invent ways of doing evil.”
God really says that, Sen. Patrick? Does that kind of vile rhetoric also “excite” you?
What about when Robertson was talking about how hard it is for a man to find a good woman to marry?
“Mainly because these boys are waiting until they get to be about 20 years old before they marry ’em. Look, you wait till they get to be about 20 years old, the only picking that’s going to take place is your pocket. You gotta marry these girls when they’re 15 or 16, they’ll pick your ducks. You need to check with mom and dad about that, of course.'”
So God wants men to marry girls when they’re 15 or 16, Sen. Patrick? Well, as long as Mom and Dad say it’s OK, right?
This is the problem with pretending to know what God wants to tell people: you can end up sounding like a fool. Or a vicious, narrow-minded demagogue.
Or both.
“Can we talk about ducks?”- Greater Tuna
Embarrassing!
Idiot
The definition of “taking the Lord’s name in vain.”
That figures.
Endless entertainment.
another wacko idiot!
Didn’t he used to do sports? Weather, maybe? One of those….
Flipping idiot!
“a vicious, narrow-minded demagogue”
This is what happens when an arrogant, former radio personality fools enough of the people. Sadly, he may become our next lieutenant governor.
really belittles the notion of god
LMAO
He’s just another dominionist authoritarian republican,
This is disturbing on so many levels. Texas politics just gets uglier and uglier.
He is at the top of the dung heap. My theory is that he believes that GOP stands for “God’s Only People.”
God spoke to me…he said…”Quack!”
Dan Patrick used to be a fool of a local sportscaster in Houston. Now he’s a fool of a Texas senator, thanks to the fools who voted for him. And he’d better be careful about promoting himself as the person knowing what God is saying, because God could get awfully pissed about that.
“So God wants men to marry girls when they’re 15 or 16, Sen. Patrick? Well, as long as Mom and Dad say it’s OK, right?”. Well actually yes, that is how it works. The hypocrisy of abstinence lies in insisting on virginity until you are in your 20’s. The whole idea of virgin till married is predicated on the condition that you will marry off your daughter soon after puberty making abstinence a more achievable goal.
Democrats need to get off their duffs, register, and vote in 2014 to turn Texas blue. We have had over 10 years of this insanity. Religion is getting into every aspect of living in this state, and I, personally, who was born and live in this state, am sick of it. Religion needs to stay in the church and in your home period,
I think ducks speak through Dan Patrick. Quack, quack.
Beat me to it. Dang it. Well said, though.
Ever notice that people that know what God wants desire the same things.
“and it excites me as a Christian.”
Eewwww…….
Another Texas Taliban, using fear of God to win votes. Why do they think that God has to be mean spirited, cruel, threatening? Oh, that’s right they don’t know the diffference between The Old Testament and the New.
No surprise here. He has already proven what a narrow-minded non-Christian he is.
Which God? Why the DD God of course.
Interesting. By that logic, Mohammed spoke through Osama Bin Laden. Sounds to me like both these activities would be very dangerous.
And people actually VOTE for Dan Patrick. Dan Patrick getting elected is even scarier than Dan Patrick’s existence. Texas is a terrifying state. I need to get out of it asap.
Chump.
Ducks
Dan Patrick need to go see his doctor because of a head injury. Do all tea baggers and republican believe every thing that come out of there mouth?
To those that think its Phil Robertson’s right to believe the bible that was attacked I offer this.
It’s not his right to believe in the bible that is at issue even Satan believes, it’s his lack of understanding that Scripture was written in various historically differing cultural context’s and has been though out the centuries interpreted into many translations through the eyes and the culture, bias, prejudices of the translators. The original languages provided choices in the interpretive process and those choices determined the message told. Even it God wanted us to judge others sincerity and walk with the lord, which i am certain he doesn’t want, we should at least before condemning an entire Christian and non-Christian minority be absolutely certain of our Absolutism, be certain of what scripture was really addressing within the culture at the time it was written and its affects this culture had on the Church that required being pointed out. But thousands of years of tradition, discrimination, demonizing and assuming can harden the heart, Jesus clearly addressed this occurrence in his statement to the self-righteous religious leaders that interpreted scripture much differently than Jesus that you cannot put new wine in old wine skins because the rigidity and lack of flexibility of the latter would bring certain rupture. Clearly we must remove the veils of tradition and shallow prejudiced teachings from our eyes, minds, hearts and soften our spirits and revisit Gods word with him leading the way, maybe if we pray hard enough for truth rather than justification we will find what God wants us too or at least discover we aren’t so sure
anymore of our conclusions and must trust the Lord and embrace Grace, Mercy and Love
Neither Phil nor Dan should be given 15 seconds to be heard, because both of them have nothing of value to say or offer. We need to stop wasting time over all of this wasteful stupidity.
The only thing scarier than Dan Patrick is his constiuency. How do these maniacs get elected? Oh, right…Texans….
It is now time to release Texas residents from the right-wing politicians. I haven’t researched how extremists came to dominate Texan politics. I suspect, however, the extremist revolt has its roots in President Lyndon Johnson’s signing the Civil Rights Act. To me the defining moment Texans are fighting back was the election of a gay woman as Houston’s mayor.
Peckerwoods are going to be Peckerwoods…what else can they be? It is the result of a personal decision to be a racist hammer-head and to follow in the tradition of one’s bigot forebears. All that’s necessary to change and become a decent person is to simply decide that it’s in giving that we recieve, and grow up.
So , God speaks through Chad Hasty’s ass? Who’d a thunk it!
God’s speaking through me now , and he said patrick and Robinson are both quacks and he has no idea what there talking about
