Talking Points

From today’s TFN News Clips:

“People want to marry a virgin, just like they want a virgin toothbrush or stick of gum.”

— From an abstinence-only sex ed program used in the Canyon Independent School District in the Texas Panhandle, comparing non-virgins to used toothbrushes and chewed gum. One upset parent explains: “There is a difference between teaching children about the real consequences of any sexual encounter and teaching them that they become less valuable because they chose to have sex before marriage.”

  2. My, My… what a charming concept. Let’s see … so even a man or woman who loses a spouse or fiance for whatever reason would be equated w/ ABC gum — “already been chewed,” or a previously used toothbrush. Don’t know where to begin w/ that. Virginity is no guarantee of relationship stability or longevity. I suspect plenty of kids nowadays will see through this.

    1. Well put, and with respect to kids seeing through it, one can hope. There’s no shortage of anti-examples in my community, that is, couples who hold fast to “no sex until marriage,” who then get married quickly and young to have sex (or at least with no idea of their sexual compatibility), who then get divorced after a few years and a couple kids.

  3. Who says people want to marry a virgin? Only the extremely insecure still feel that way. Perhaps the abstinence program’s author needs therapy.

  4. I always thought people wanted to marry someone who got them, who they could see as the co parent of their children, who they could live with and grow old with for the rest of their lives.

I had no idea that it was all about fucking a virgin. How did I get so naive?

  5. In addition to otherr good points, what message does this send to the one in five girls and young women who will be sexually assaulted? Don’t bother reporting – you’re worthless now.
