Marriage Amendment an Unnecessary Diversion

H.J.R. 6 Is an Effort to Distract Voters from Real Problems Facing Texas

April 25, 2005
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

President Kathy Miller of the Texas Freedom Network released the following statement on today’s vote in the state House to approve H.J.R. 6 by Rep. Warren Chisum, R-Pampa. The measure would amend the state constitution to define marriage as only a union of one man and one woman. It also bars civil unions for same-sex and opposite-sex couples.

“Today’s unnecessary and divisive vote limits the rights of all unmarried Texans, gay or straight, and it is a diversion from the real issues facing working families. It will do nothing to lower property taxes, fully fund our public schools, provide health insurance for children of the working poor and protect abused and neglected kids. Shameful votes like this one and the approval last week of a ban on gay and lesbian foster parents are designed simply to play politics at the expense of a vulnerable minority in our state.”
