Colbert Hearts Texas SBOE

Thought the late night comedians had moved on from ridiculing the Texas State Board of Education? Think again.  Stephen Colbert of The Colbert Report once again took aim at his favorite punching bag last night in a segment called “I’s on Edjukashun.” Check it out. (Colbert’s riff on the SBOE starts just after the 2:00 mark.)

Ouch.

This isn’t Stephen’s first run-in with the Texas SBOE. In March he interviewed historian Eric Foner, who bemoaned the board’s inaccurate rewrite of American history:

The problem is they [the SBOE] think America began perfect and has been getting better ever since.

Folks, if you’ve had enough of this embarrassment, join TFN’s Just Educate campaign to reform the state board. Our system for writing curriculum might make good political satire, but there’s nothing funny about handicapping our students.

  1. I saw this last night, and although I laughed I also cringed. The SBOE has, indeed, made TX a national laughingstock once again. Bush & Perry have certainly done their parts, too.

  2. Yeah, that Colbert guy will have you rolling in the aisles. The trouble with the Texas SBOE story is that it starts out with a huge laugh and ends in tears.

Here are some articles I think TFN and others here might enjoy reading in your spare time while we wait for the next gaffe from the Christmas baker’s oven at the North Pole. The first article is by Ina Hughes, a Christian and retired newspaper journalist who drives the Religious Right nuts in Appalachia. Ina is a really good read!!! This article fetched 264 reader comments. Read it and the comments.

The other two articles are about a new nationwide Scripps Howard newspaper plan to educate the average American citizen about the meaning of the First Amendment. You can bet the Religious Right wolves will be baying at the moon when this program strips the shroud off their lies and deceptions in 8th grader English:

  3. How about this? The “Fruitcake” and the “Anti-Fruitcake.” The Anti-Fruitcake is a bar code, and the number of the bar code is $6.66—plus tax.
