AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas House of Representatives today approved an amendment to the state budget proposed by Rep. Abel Herrero that would prohibit the use of public funds for voucher programs.
The allowance of voucher programs would divert tax dollars from neighborhood students in public schools to subsidize private and religious schools.
Texas Freedom Network Vice President of Programs Marti Bier (they/them) issued the following response:
“As a parent with children in Texas public schools, I am proud of our State House Representatives for passing Rep. Herrero’s budget amendment prohibiting publicly funded voucher programs. Public funds belong in public schools. With today’s vote, members of the House have shown their commitment to our children’s right to learn and dream no matter where they live, how much money their parents make, or the color of their skin. Vouchers would violate that right by preventing our neighborhood schools from receiving the resources they need to deliver a quality education to our children.”
