AUSTIN, Texas – The U.S. Supreme Court decision Wednesday opened the path for Texas and other states to redraw their electoral maps after weakening key protections in the Voting Rights Act.
The ruling narrows how Section 2 of the law can be interpreted, which outlaws voting practices that discriminate against people based on race. This includes how political maps are drawn. This provision has blocked Texas from redrawing at least one of its maps every decade since it passed, such as the maps that have been challenged since they went into effect in 2021.
Texas Rising Advocacy Manager Lexy Garcia (she/her) issued the following statement:
“Make no mistake, this devastating decision is voter suppression in action. It’s yet another example of how the Roberts Court is helping the MAGA regime steal and control our elections. We must fight back, protect and organize. The VRA is the result of the nation’s largest and most diverse civil rights coalition, and building that kind of power is what will win it back.”
