AUSTIN, Texas — California voters have approved Proposition 50, a statewide measure that temporarily transfers congressional map-drawing authority from the state’s independent redistricting commission to the Legislature for the 2026-2030 election cycles. This change is designed to counter political gerrymandering in states like Texas by enabling California to create maps that strengthen Democratic representation before the independent commission resumes duties in 2031.
Texas Freedom Network President and Executive Director Felicia Martin (she/her) issued the following response:
“Texas has become the testing ground for anti-democratic extremism. Our work is to expose it, organize against it, and build the civic power to stop it. When communities in California or anywhere else reject these tactics, it’s proof that what we’re doing in Texas matters far beyond our borders.”
Texas Freedom Network Political Director Rocío Fierro-Pérez (she/her) issued the following response:
“Texans helped lead the way by refusing to stay silent while extremists tried to rig the rules and silence communities. For years, Texas Freedom Network has documented, exposed, and organized against the same playbook of partisan power grabs, book bans, and religious coercion that inspired California’s reform.
“TFN is proud to work alongside with California and our coalition partners nationwide who are building a stronger, more inclusive democracy. This is a collective win.”
Proposition 50 is part of a growing national pushback against extremism and political manipulation that has spread from Texas to states across the country.
TFN confronts extremism, disinformation, and religious coercion while expanding civic participation among young people, people of faith, and pro-public-education voters. The organization’s work builds long-term power in Texas and strengthens the national guardrail against extremism, proving that what happens in Texas reverberates nationwide
Texas is where these battles start. TFN is where the fight for democracy gets organized.
