HOUSTON, Texas — Voters in the Cypress-Fairbanks Independent School District have elected new members to the Board of Trustees, choosing candidates who focused their campaigns on listening to families, supporting teachers, and creating schools where every student feels safe and welcomed.

Texas Freedom Network (TFN) proudly endorsed Lesley Guilmart, Dr. Cleveland Lane, Jr., and Kendra Camarena, three longtime educators and advocates who ran on a simple but powerful message: public schools should be safe, welcoming places where every student can learn and thrive. Their campaigns reminded voters what’s at stake when extremists use classrooms to push politics instead of supporting kids.

Over the past several years, Cy-Fair’s far-right board majority, backed by deep-pocketed political groups, have divided the community and weakened support for students and teachers. They banned books, gutted librarian positions, imposed discriminatory policies targeting LGBTQ+ students, and prioritized culture wars over student success. This election represents a community-driven effort to take back local schools from extremists who have used fear and division as tools of control.

“These results show that people in Cy-Fair are ready for something better,” said Rocío Fierro-Pérez (she/her), Political Director for the Texas Freedom Network. “Families, students, and educators came together to say that every child deserves a great education in a school that welcomes and supports them.”

Each of TFN’s endorsed candidates brings deep experience and a shared commitment to public education.

  • Lesley Guilmart, a longtime educator and parent, ran to rebuild trust, support teachers, and keep politics out of classrooms.
  • Dr. Cleveland Lane, Jr., a Prairie View A&M professor and Cy-Fair parent, focused on academic excellence and open communication.
  • Kendra Camarena, an educator and community leader, emphasized closing opportunity gaps and making sure all students feel seen and supported.

Cy-Fair’s election results echo a broader shift happening across Texas, where communities are rejecting extremism and reasserting their right to public schools grounded in honesty, inclusion, and respect. TFN remains committed to mobilizing communities across Texas to defend every child’s freedom to learn in a safe, welcoming classroom.
