AUSTIN, Texas – Following the outcome of a Public Information Request, Texas Freedom Network secured a series of documents from the Texas Education Agency late Thursday, related to the ongoing social studies Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills, or TEKS, process at the State Board of Education.
This release comes 66 days since the last June SBOE meeting, and includes minutes from that meeting and the K-Grade 8 TEKS which were passed. It also includes the proposed drafts for high school courses which were delayed until next week’s meeting because the Board ran out of time to meaningfully address them. While those drafts were also released alongside an agenda just ten days before the August 31 meeting, the approved K-8 TEKS and any relevant minutes still have not been shared publicly, despite nearly ten weeks passing since the meeting.
Texas Freedom Network Executive Director Felicia Martin (she/her) issued the following statement:
“Even with our resources, if the Texas Freedom Network has to file a Public Information Request just to discover what politicians decided during a public meeting, how is a parent supposed to find out what the state will be teaching their children? Texas families deserve transparency. The SBOE delayed the vote on these high school standards because they realized voting on hundreds of amendments late into the night was leading to sloppy mistakes. Now they’re depriving parents of the necessary time to review the drafts and offer any input on the future of their kids. Not to mention, the academics and other experts who can help us understand the history being erased in favor of political agendas.”
Despite receiving the documents only days before the next SBOE meeting, TFN is still committed to reviewing what’s been passed and reporting its findings to Texas families as soon as possible.
At the upcoming SBOE meeting, there isn’t a public hearing scheduled for the high school social studies TEKS. However, the community can still sign up to speak to the board on specific agenda items, including the social studies TEKS. The meeting is set to begin on August 31, 2026.
