TFN Statement: Court Decision Means Anti-Equality Politicians Are Renewing Culture War over Marriage

The U.S. Supreme Court’s decision not to review an important marriage case means Texas politicians will renew their culture war battle over equality. We just sent out the following press statement:

TFN STATEMENT ON MONDAY’S SUPREME COURT DECISION ON SAME-SEX MARRIAGE BENEFITS CASE IN TEXAS

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
December 5, 2017

Following is a statement from Texas Freedom Network President Kathy Miller on Monday’s decision by the U.S. Supreme Court in a Texas case over marriage benefits for same-sex couples. The Texas Supreme Court had earlier ruled that the U.S. Supreme Court’s 2015 decision in favor of same-sex marriage, Obergefell v. Hodges, did not settle whether married same-sex couples have a right to the same benefits as other married couples. The U.S. justices on Monday chose not to review that decision.

“The legal effect of Monday’s decision won’t be clear for a while, but the political future ahead of us surely is. Politicians who are openly hostile to treating everyone equally under the law will now redouble their efforts to render the Supreme Court’s landmark marriage ruling almost meaningless for same-sex couples. After turning bathrooms into a political battleground, they will now wage a mean-spirited, scorched-earth campaign to rob families they don’t like of the security that everyone else gets from marriage. This just condemns us to a renewed culture war battle over marriage and equality and makes Texas look out of step with the rest of the country.”
