Rafael Cruz Suggests ‘Wicked’ Voters Elected ‘Homosexual Mayor’ in Houston

Rafael Cruz, the far-right evangelical and father of U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, clearly has nothing but contempt for Houston voters and their mayor, Annise Parker. Here is Rafael speaking at an event two weeks ago for the political action committee trying to repeal the Houston Equal Rights Ordinance (HERO):

“If the righteous are not running for office, if the righteous are not even voting, what is left? The wicked electing the wicked. And we get what we deserve. I’ll tell you what. It is appalling that in a city like Houston, right in the middle of the Bible Belt, we had a homosexual mayor. Why? Because too many people have been sitting in their pews or sitting at home with this business about ‘separation of church and state.’ Did you know separation of church and state is not in the Constitution or in the Declaration [of Independence]? It’s a lie.”

The video is from our friends at Right Wing Watch, which has more information about Cruz speaking at the event here.

Houston voters go to the polls on November 3 to decide whether to repeal HERO. The ordinance ensures that a broad range of hardworking Houstonians – regardless of race, age, gender, pregnancy, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, disability or military status – has the opportunity to earn a living, take care of their families, have housing, and be served by businesses and government, without fear of discrimination.

Supporters of HERO must vote YES on Proposition 1 on November 3. Show your support for Proposition 1 and the campaign for equality in Houston here.

  1. I certainly did not know that the “separation of church and state” was a lie, but I be fact checking that for sure.

    Thank you.

    1. Dominionists I hope not. That kind of thinking led to the Holocaust. I got in trouble at a Christian school because as a teacher the name Martin Luther came up and when asked what he reminds us of I said anti-semitism and dominion theology.

  2. Although the actual words “separation of church and state” do not appear in either of the documents Cruz mentioned, it made crystal clear that this is a SECULAR nation. Religion is permitted, of course, but the Constitution does not ever say that this is a single religion nation.
The Constitution says, in the first amendment “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.”
THAT is where the separation of church and state is. It simply states that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion.
Keep in mind that the elder Cruz is as crazy as his son. He is a religious bigot and believes that HIS is the only religion in this country.
He rejects science in refusing to accept that homosexuals are made in the womb. It is NOT a matter of choice. Do YOU remember having to make a choice between being gay or straight? Neither do I.
One day boys were covered from head to toe with cooties, the next day they were WOW! No choice offered, none given.
Bigotry in any sense of the word makes me ill and both Cruz idiots make me very sick.

  3. You could only call it a lie if you were to assert that Thomas Jefferson, of all people, didn’t understand the intent of the First Amendment. The phrase comes from his letter to the Baptists in Danbury, Connecticut.

Since that’s plainly absurd, Cruz is being quite disingenuous here.

Many key constitutional concepts are known by names not explicitly stated in the text itself. Among them are checks and balances, rule of law, and presidential veto, in addition to the separation of church and state.

  4. I don’t know if Rafael Cruz is lying or is just drastically misinformed, but either way, he’s dangerous because he has such a big megaphone.

  5. Yes, both Cruces are assuredly Dominionists. They use the vocabulary of the Seven Mountains, and the elder Cruz has anointed Ted as a king.
