TFN Statement on Rep. Krause’s Call for a Special Session that Includes Anti-Abortion Legislation

AUSTIN – Texas Freedom Network President Kathy Miller today released the following statement regarding state Rep. Matt Krause, R-Fort Worth, writing in a Facebook post that he would support a special session of the Texas Legislature to address gun violence with the condition that it also include anti-abortion legislation.

“Rep. Krause’s alleged support for a special session is not serious and shouldn’t be treated as such. This is another example of state Republicans portraying themselves like they are willing to get something done to address the epidemic of gun violence, when the real goal is to ultimately do nothing. Last month, a white supremacist gunned down 22 people at a Walmart in El Paso and weeks later another gunman killed seven people at random in West Texas. That Rep. Krause would twist these tragedies into a debate about abortion shows that anti-abortion lawmakers are only ‘pro-life’ when the politics suit them.”

In recent legislative sessions, the Republican-controlled Legislature has passed numerous anti-abortion measures, but it has done next to nothing to address gun violence even in the wake of mass shootings at Santa Fe High School and a church in Sutherland Springs.
