HOUSTON — The United States District Court for the Southern District of Texas today ruled that the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) is not lawful, upholding an injunction from Texas District Judge Andrew Hanen that prevented first-time applicants from receiving DACA while allowing current recipients to renew their DACA status.
Texas Freedom Network’s Texas Rising Senior Regional Program Coordinator Ivonne Diaz (she/her/ella) had the following reaction:
“We need immigration reform now! Although DACA gave me and so many others hope, it was never meant to be the solution. Judge Hanen’s decision is harmful to many who hope to live without fear of separation from loved ones and their communities, but because of Hanen’s previous ruling, we knew this decision was a very real possibility.
“It’s important to reiterate that current DACA holders can still renew their status. And for those in our communities who wait for permanent protections from the courts and politicians, we remind them that DACA was won by the relentless, powerful organizing of millions of young people of color across the United States. We will harness our collective power to find a new way forward. Together, we’ll protect what we love.”

HOUSTON – El Tribunal de Distrito de los Estados Unidos para el Distrito Sur de Texas anoche lanzo por dictamen que el programa de Acción Diferida para Los Llegados en la Infancia (DACA, por sus siglas en inglés) no es legal, y confirmó una orden judicial del juez de distrito de Texas, Andrew Hanen, que impedía que los solicitantes nuevos recibieran DACA.
Texas Freedom Network’s Texas Rising Senior Regional Program Coordinator Ivonne Diaz (she/her/ella) tuvo la siguiente reacción:
“¡Necesitamos una reforma migratoria ahora! Aunque DACA me dio a mí y a muchos otros esperanza, nunca tuvo la intención de ser la solución. La decisión del juez Hanen es perjudicial para muchos que esperan vivir sin miedo a la separación de sus seres queridos y sus comunidades, pero debido al fallo anterior de Hanen, sabíamos que esta decisión era una posibilidad muy real.
“Es importante reiterar que los actuales titulares de DACA aún pueden renovar su estatus. Y para aquellos en nuestras comunidades que esperan protecciones permanentes de los tribunales y los políticos, les recordamos que DACA fue ganado por la incesante y poderosa organización de millones de jóvenes de color en todo Estados Unidos. Aprovecharemos nuestro poder colectivo para encontrar un nuevo camino a seguir. Juntos, protegeremos lo que amamos”.
