Join the Team: Texas Rising Census and Civic Engagement Coordinator (Houston)

Texas Rising seeks a full-time Census and Civic Engagement Coordinator in Houston. Texas Rising is a statewide non-partisan, grassroots organization that is building an informed and effective movement of young Texans working toward equality and social justice.
The Regional Field Coordinator is the face of Texas Rising in Houston, working to advance and grow our network of activists and organizers. The primary responsibilities of the Census and Civic Engagement Coordinator include recruiting, training, and managing teams of college-age students on area campuses to build grassroots power and implement census, civic engagement, and issue-based advocacy campaigns.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

General Organizing

  • Applicants must be well organized, resourceful and persistent; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the progressive values, mission and goals of the organization.
  • Develop a plan to organize the region based on its unique characteristics
  • Organize and grow TX Rising student chapters on targeted campuses in the Houston area
  • Travel frequently to campus chapters to assist in planning and execution of grassroots census, civic engagement, and issue-advocacy campaigns
  • Develop and maintain relationships with partner organizations, allies, and other Houston in Action organizers
  • Work with communications departments (at TFN and Houston In Action) to identify community stories to uplift, and to provide feedback on messaging efficacy for specific communities
  • Serve as TX Rising representative at events, conferences and meetings, including occasional public speaking engagements
  • Collect and record data daily
  • Prepare, lead, and coordinate training and logistics of outreach events, including trainings, visibility events, speaker forums and lobby days

Implement a voter engagement campaign

  • Includes voter registration, voter education, and Get Out The Vote (GOTV) efforts (including phone banking, text outreach, and block walking)
  • Management of part time voter engagement staff
  • Volunteer management
  • Build volunteer participation in all TX Rising events through various outreach strategies

Implement a census engagement campaign

  • Build relationships and organize in targeted historically undercounted communities (communities of color, low income, renters, youth 18 to 25, foreign born, limited English proficiency, LGBTQ, limited internet access, parents with young children, formerly incarcerated, and people with disabilities) throughout Harris County.
  • Plan, prepare and execute community outreach and relationship building through tabling, visiting community hotspots, and canvassing as outlined by the existing census metrics and goals

Extensive travel and sometimes working long and/or irregular hours are required. This position reports directly to the Texas Rising Director and is Houston.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Must be able to build and implement a plan for your region
  • Applicants must be well organized, resourceful and persistent; possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the progressive values, mission and goals of the organization.
  • Experience in volunteer and staff management is preferred
  • Applicants must be highly motivated self-starters who are able to work independently and in a team environment.
  • Ideal candidate will be able to bring people together and motivate them to get involved in the political process. In addition, applicants must be able to work effectively and collaboratively with diverse populations and will have the ability to hold relationships with disenfranchised communities.
  • Must be solutions oriented and have an entrepreneurial spirit
  • Experience in volunteer and staff management is preferred.
  • Fluency in at least one additional language to English is preferred
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office, Basecamp and Google Drive/Docs/Sheets
  • Ability to manage administrative and financial information
  • Skills in social media, digital and peer-to-peer outreach
  • Requires a car and driver’s license
  • A demonstrated interest and experience in civic engagement
  • High emotional intelligence, self-awareness, and a great listener
