The Texas Senate is moving quickly to ram through a private school voucher scheme in the special legislative session. We have to act now in support of public education and our neighborhood public schools. Read More

Things have moved incredibly fast at the Texas Legislature in the last 24 hours, with both the House and the Senate meeting today and likely taking up anti-LGBT measures.

Your action is needed ASAP. We ask you to please make calls to your state representatives and state senators on these issues:

Call Your State Representative – “Bathroom” Amendment Texas House members are expected to offer a so-called “bathroom bill” amendment to SB 2078 that would target transgender schoolchildren for discrimination.

Call You State Senator – Foster Care and Adoptions In the Senate, it appears that HB 3859 will finally get a vote. This bill would allow child welfare providers that contract with the state to discriminate against LGBT families in foster care and adoptive placements.

Please contact your state representative and your state senator TODAY. Your message to them is simple: Oppose any and all attempts to discriminate against LGBT Texans.

Texas should be an open and welcoming state. If we don’t stop these bills today, lawmakers could well be on their way to legalizing discrimination.

Far-right Texas State Board of Education members have been carrying a grudge since 1995. That’s the year legislators said “enough!” and passed a law to limit the board’s ability to censor textbook content, like the science of evolution. Activists on and off the board have been mad at that change ever since. This year, they’re making a strong push to undo those limits with House Bill 1291.

If HB 1291 passes, board members will once again have the power to censor textbook content simply by calling it “unsuitable” for children. That would be amazing power in the hands of individuals who have in years past argued that topics like the accurate history of slavery and civil rights struggles are not suitable for children.

Call to your senator today and tell them to vote “no” on HB 1291.

SB 8, a cruel and unnecessary anti-abortion bill, which has already passed in the Texas Senate, could be voted on by the Texas House as soon as this Friday, May 19.

According to our friends at NARAL Pro-Choice Texas, this bill would “ban the donation of fetal tissue from abortion clinics for research purposes and contains a copy of an existing federal ban of safe, medically-proven abortion procedure. It also requires embryonic and fetal tissue to be buried or cremated, rather than handled according to current public health regulations.”

We need phone calls to your state representatives to keep this bill from going any further. Here’s how you can contact your state rep and some suggested language to use when you do:

So, we were told repeatedly that the whole point of the #SaveChikFilA bill was that they should be free to do whatever they like. Now that they're doing something different, as a private business, the same people who pushed the bill are blasting them. Ok. #TxLege
