The religious right strategically uses religion and religious language, combined with patriotic symbols, to push a political agenda that has little connection to the values of mainstream people of faith. It is, in short, a political rather than religious movement. The Texas Freedom Network has monitored the religious right in Texas since 1995.

Patrick Calls Transgender Student Rights Debate a ‘Come and Take It Moment’

This morning the U.S. Department of Education issued a letter to public school districts across the country advising them that federal law requires them to protect transgender students from discrimination and allow them to use bathrooms and locker rooms "consistent with their gender identity." Naturally, Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick, who has been on potty patrol every single day this week, wanted to rail against the letter and called a press conference, which started only a few minutes after the Texas Supreme Court ruled that the state's formula for funding public schools was constitutional. That court ruling carries with it heavy implications for the state's schools and whether they'll be adequately funded in years to come. Read More

A New Low for Ken Paxton

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, who has been charged in state and federal courts with securities fraud, has released a video in which he insists that he's being persecuted because he's a "conservative Christian" and a person of "strong faith." Read More

Bullies

It's hard to imagine a more disgraceful demonstration of ignorance, fear-mongering and bullying. That's what we're seeing as one of the state's highest elected officials joins with religious-right groups in demanding that the Fort Worth Independent School District rescind a policy allowing transgender students to use the restroom in peace. Video: School Superintendents Educate Mary Lou Bruner

Texas State Board of Education (SBOE) candidate Mary Lou Bruner, R-Mineola, who at this point is best known for claiming President Obama as a young man was a drug user who worked as a gay prostitute to pay for his habit and numerous other incendiary statements, recently appeared at a meeting of several school superintendents in the SBOE district she hopes to represent.

While there, she gave a speech that was so full of inaccuracies that it appeared to have left the superintendents appalled at her lack of basic fact-checking and lack of knowledge of what was going on in their school districts. What Bruner got in return was an earful.

In one exchange, for example, when challenged by a superintendent, Bruner briefly insisted that she had better information than the superintendent because she had obtained it from a “citizen” living in the superintendent’s district.

At another point, in response to a question, Bruner claimed to have met with several superintendents in her SBOE district during her campaign, including the superintendent of the school district in her hometown of Mineola. That prompted the Mineola ISD superintendent to stand up and deny that the two had ever met… Read More

Texas state Rep. Molly White, R-Belton, lost her re-election bid in the Republican primary on March 2, but she’s still reinforcing her reputation as one of the Legislature’s biggest Islamophobes. Wednesday night she posted on her official Facebook page a link to a video featuring Brigitte Gabriel, one of the most vicious anti-Muslim extremists in America today. In the video Gabriel supposedly “reveals how the Muslim Brotherhood plan for America.”

When a commenter points out that the video is hateful nonsense, White replies:

“Yes, I hate Islam, the Muslim Brotherhood and all terrorist organizations. I will fight for your freedom to be ignorant and hateful to your fellow Americans because I love America and everything she stands for even when her own turn against her.”

In further comments she defends her hatred of Islam and claims: “I know it, I have studied it, I have been briefed on it by experts.”

In Molly White’s twisted world, apparently, all of the world’s more than 1.6 billion Muslims are terrorists. And hating Muslims somehow demonstrates her “love” for America. Her love for America doesn’t seem to extend to America’s guarantee of religious freedom for… Read More
