A ‘Christian, Conservative’ Speaker

That’s what one State Republican Executive Committee member says he — and, supposedly, other Texans — wants as the next Speaker of the Texas House of Representatives. The Texas Observer reports that SREC member John Cook said the following to another committee member in a Thursday (Nov. 30) e-mail:

“WE elected a house with Christian, conservative values. We now want a true Christian, conservative running it. This is not about Straus, this is about getting what the people want.”

The report about Cook’s e-mail comes as Christian-right pressure groups insist that they haven’t embarked on a religious crusade to replace current Texas House Speaker Joe Straus, a San Antonio Republican who is Jewish. (See here and here for more about that.)

  1. GIVE ME A BREAK! Nonsense like this makes me ashamed to say I’m a Christian. I learned in Sunday School that Christians were more loving and tolerant than this.

  2. Gee. I wish the current speaker were a Lutheran, Catholic, or United Methodist so we could all hear these fruitcakes yelling, “But we want a Christian speaker!!!!!”

Oh, you better watch out. You better not cry. You better not pout. I’m tellin’ you why. Je-e-e-e-sus is coming to town. Funny thing, Jesus was Jewish. He never was a Christian—died Jewish 100 percent. I wonder what they would be doing if he was the current speaker?

  3. I am ashamed. I think Mr. Cook needs to refresh his memory on a basic Christian bible principle of what it means to be filled with the Christian Holy Spirit: ” But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, forbearance, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control. Against such things there is no law.” Galatians 5:22-23

  4. That is about the height of Jew-hate that I’ve seen in a few weeks. Some Christians still think this is a Christian country meant to be run by and for Christians only. I’ve nothing against Christians or Christianity. This country has been blessed partly because of the freedom that it gave to the Jews. Holland prospered for the same reason. Any country that treats Jews kindly is blessed. Look at Poland. It is a 3rd world country. They rely on horses and buggies, still have outhouses, and their economy…well, it smells like an outhouse. Why? Because most of the Poles brought out their Jews to be enslaved and then murdered in cold blood. The British Empire has been reduced to a little island off the French coast because they attempted to renege on their promise to support a Jewish homeland.

You can pooh-pooh what I’m saying, but G-d himself said that the Jews are the apple of his eye. People mess with the Jews at their own risk.
Look it up in Deuteronomy 32:10. That isn’t what “I” say, I wouldn’t DARE say that, but the Bible says so, go argue with it, not me.

Then there are those who are screaming about the Community Center that will REPLACE the Mosque that was on the 7th floor of Tower Two. I’ve read the Koran, have any of those who oppose Islam done so? The Koran calls for some pretty radical punishments, but like the Jewish people who have very similar punishments (if a child disobeys their parents they are to be stoned to death) no Jew in their right mind would even conceive of actually doing that. Historically, it was never imposed, but like other horrible penalties, they’ve never been put into effect.

That cannot be said of Islam. Just recently they wanted to stone a woman who was unfaithful. They’ve also wanted to stone women who have been raped! But there is much in the Koran that is not even considered by Muslims. The Imam of the Community Center told me today that they are going to go ahead but don’t have the finances to do so at this time. So much for the imagined millions of dollars they’re supposed to have.

The Imam estimated that about 5% of Muslims are radical, the rest just want to live their lives without the threat of being starved to death. I can live with that. But the idiot who wants ONLY a Christian speaker needs to be taken outside and explain to him in no uncertain words that this is NOT a Christian country. That there are many religions in the United States and that only about 60% of the founders of this country realized that it could not be a Christian country because THEY WERE NOT CHRISTIANS! They were Deists or agnostics. The very thought that the United States was founded as a Christian country is beyond absurdity. Europe was rife with state religions. People were and in some cases still FORCED to pay for the state religion although they do not subscribe to that religion. Our founders were smart enough to not establish a religious country, but established a FREEDOM OF RELIGION that is in our Constitution.
